Abuja, The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has joined the global community in celebrating World Radio Day 2026, describing radio as a vital pillar of democracy, national development, and public enlightenment in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Friday to commemorate the annual event marked every February 13, the union noted that this year’s theme, “Radio and Artificial Intelligence,” highlights the evolving landscape of broadcasting in an era of rapid technological advancement.
The NUJ emphasized that despite the growth of digital media platforms, radio remains Nigeria’s most accessible and trusted medium of communication, effectively bridging information gaps across urban and rural communities.
“From the bustling streets of Lagos to the remote farmsteads in the North, radio continues to give a voice to the voiceless and foster national unity,” the statement read.
The union also underscored the power of inclusion inherent in radio broadcasting, noting its ability to reach diverse audiences in local languages and ensure wider participation in national discourse.
While celebrating the medium’s resilience, the NUJ called on stakeholders to prioritize the safety and protection of broadcast journalists, stressing that a free and secure press environment is essential for accountability and democratic governance.
The statement further encouraged radio stations to embrace emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, to enhance audience engagement and expand their reach, while maintaining professional ethics and journalistic integrity.
“Radio is more than just waves and frequencies; it is the heartbeat of our communities. Even as we evolve into a more digital society, the intimacy and immediacy of radio remain unmatched,” the union stated.
The NUJ congratulated radio broadcast journalists across the country for their dedication and contributions to national development.
