The Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, has ordered an investigation into allegations of misconduct involving some of its personnel following a petition by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Army Public Relations Officer, Major Yahaya Ibrahim, the Commandant of the Depot said the Nigerian Army views the allegations with serious concern and is committed to ensuring justice if any personnel are found culpable.
The statement was in response to a press release by NANS Southwest Zone D, which alleged that some soldiers engaged in acts of harassment, intimidation and assault against students.
According to the Commandant, the Nigerian Army exists to protect all citizens, particularly young people, and any conduct that undermines that responsibility is unacceptable.
«”No student or law-abiding citizen should ever feel unsafe or be subjected to harassment, intimidation or assault by those entrusted with the security of lives and property,” the statement read.»
The Commandant disclosed that an investigation has been ordered in line with military regulations and the core values of the Nigerian Army to establish the facts surrounding the incident and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice.
To facilitate the investigation, the Army appealed to the NANS Southwest Zone D Coordinator, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, to provide all available evidence and witness statements relating to the allegations.
The statement further emphasized that the alleged actions do not reflect the standards of discipline, training and character expected of personnel at the Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo.
It assured members of the public that any officer or soldier found guilty of misconduct would face the full weight of military law.
The Commandant also expressed readiness to meet with the leadership of NANS at the earliest opportunity to discuss the matter and agree on a way forward.
The statement reaffirmed the Depot Nigerian Army’s commitment to professionalism, accountability and the protection of the rights of all citizens.
