On August 27, 1985, General Ibrahim Babangida led a palace coup that overthrew the military government of General Muhammadu Buhari. The coup, planned by Babangida and other high-ranking military officers, including Sani Abacha and Aliyu Gusau, was executed by mid-level officers like Sambo Dasuki and Abubakar Dangiwa Umar. Babangida justified the coup by citing Buhari’s failure to address economic problems, promising to rejuvenate the economy.

Key Details

Date: August 27, 1985.

Perpetrators: General Ibrahim Babangida and a faction of the Armed Forces.

Target: The military government of General Muhammadu Buhari.

Reason for Coup: Babangida claimed the government under Buhari had failed to effectively manage the economy and combat corruption.

Outcome: Buhari was ousted, and Babangida became Nigeria’s head of state, establishing a new ruling body, the Armed Forces Ruling Council (AFRC).

Key Figures in the Plot:

While Sambo Dasuki has been mentioned in various accounts as part of the arrest team, his exact role is sometimes contested in historical records. Some sources emphasize Abubakar Umar and Aminu more prominently.

Babangida’s justification wasn’t only “economic mismanagement.” He also accused Buhari of inflexibility, human rights abuses, and lack of consultation in governance.

Sani Abacha’s role was crucial, but more as the voice of the coup (radio announcement) than a frontline executor.

Aliyu Gusau, as Director of Military Intelligence, was more of a behind-the-scenes strategist.
