A tragic incident occurred on Easter Sunday evening along Okpanam Road in Asaba, Delta State, where a strong wind reportedly uprooted a mango tree, killing a commercial tricycle (keke) rider and one passenger.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the tree suddenly gave way during the windstorm, crushing the victims and leaving bystanders in shock. The incident has since sparked grief and outrage among residents.

Concerned citizens have called on the state government and relevant environmental authorities to urgently address the dangers posed by aging roadside trees in the area.

Many residents expressed fears that several of the trees lining Okpanam Road have become weak and hazardous, stressing the need for immediate inspection and possible replacement.

Some reactions highlighted that the victims had no forewarning of the tragedy, emphasizing the preventable nature of the incident if proper measures had been taken.

Others recalled a similar recent occurrence in which a falling tree branch damaged a vehicle belonging to a former Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Lawrence Ejiofor, raising further concerns about public safety.

The incident has also reignited questions about the role of government agencies responsible for environmental management and urban renewal in preventing such disasters.

Residents are now urging authorities to act swiftly to prevent future loss of lives and property.
