Edo State House of Assembly on resumption of plenary Tuesday commenced a debate on a Bill for a Law to Repeal the Edo State Sanitation and Pollution Management Law 2023 and to Enact a law to provide for Sanitation, Pollution and Waste management Law in Edo State and for other matters connected there with 2025 at second Reading.

 

Flagging off Debate on the Bill, Majority Leader and Member Representing Esan West Constituency, Hon Jonathan Ibhamawu , said this Bill is timely as it will help in remodeling the Waste management techniques, regulate sanitary activities, and give the state a cleaner, healthier and more conducive environment fashioned after the developed countries who have gotten it right.

 

Hon Ibhamawu while soliciting for members support for the bill explained that repealing the obsolete parts of the previous law will give room for a Law that would help in Refuse and waste Disposal, to correct the negative trends in society on waste Disposal creating a better waste management trend.

 

Speaking in support of the bill, the members representing Esan North East 1 and Deputy Majority Leader Hon Adeh Isibor reiterated that the bill when passed would help sanitize the Waste and Refuse management, reduce security challenges attributed to some waste collectors .

 

These according to Hon Adeh include the registration of those in the Refuse collection and disposal business including Scavengers.

 

This will reduce illegal activities in the sector and curbing refuse disposal from moving vehicles and other forms of illegal waste Disposal activities.

 

Deputy Speaker and Member Representing Orhionmwon 1 Constituency Rt Hon Osawonyi Atu, Member Representing Akoko-Edo 11 Constituency, Hon Donald Okogbe called for the planting of trees,green grasses to boost environmental sanity.

 

Summing up, Speaker Rt Hon Chief Blessing Sheriff Agbebaku called for the desilting of drains and packing the Refuse afterwards.

 

He also joined in the clamour for tree planting calling on all tiers of Government to do same.

 

He thereafter committed the bill to the relevant Committee for appropriate action.

 

Also today, the Bill to amend the Secret Cult and similar Activities Prohibition Law 2025 was also debated with Majority Leader Hon Jonathan Ibhamawu said the amendment is necessary to strengthen the existing Law to eradicate the activities of cult related activities in the state.

 

Hon Ibhamawu said the trend is worrisome as it has made parents childless at old age and made young girls widows.

 

He said the amendment is to seek action against sponsors of these cultists who provide funding for the cult organizations.

 

Lawmakers who supported the amendment include Rt Hon Osawonyi Atu, Rt Hon Maria Edeko, Hon Adeh Isibor all commended the Governor Distinguished Senator Monday Okpebholo for his unrelenting fight against cultism and tackling the trend head-on.

 

The Speaker Rt Hon Chief Blessing Sheriff Agbebaku Committed the amendment to the appropriate committee to report back in two(2) weeks.

 

The House then adjourned sitting to Wednesday 17th September 2025 after an adjournment motion moved by Hon Ojie Eugene Inegbeboh and Seconded by Hon Bright Iyamu.
