The Edo State Government has announced the commencement of enforcement and mop-up operations against commercial vehicles that have failed to comply with the state’s Commercial Vehicle Colour Code Scheme, as part of renewed efforts to enhance security, regulate public transportation, and protect commuters.

According to a statement issued by Agbongiasede Gloria, Public Relations Officer, Edo State Ministry of Transportation, the enforcement exercise is scheduled to begin on Monday, January 12, across the state.

The PRO clarified that the exercise is not a new policy, but a reinforcement of an existing state regulation that mandates the compulsory painting and registration of all commercial vehicles operating within Edo State.

Under the scheme, commercial vehicles including vanettes, minibuses, and Mitsubishi buses are required to be painted in the approved Edo State colour combination of yellow with fire-red stripes and obtain an official security code from the Ministry of Transportation.

Agbongiasede explained that as part of the process, each compliant vehicle will be issued a unique tracking identification number, which will be captured in a centralised database managed by the ministry.

“This system will enable quick identification and tracking of commercial vehicles, especially in cases where they are linked to criminal activities, thereby supporting security operations and investigations,” the statement noted.

Speaking on the enforcement drive, the Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Saturday Uwilekhue Idehen, JP, said the government is determined to close security gaps within the transport sector created by non-compliance.

He warned that any commercial vehicle found operating outside the approved colour code and registration framework after the commencement of enforcement would be sanctioned in line with existing laws.

The Ministry of Transportation has therefore urged all commercial vehicle operators who are yet to comply with the colour code and registration requirements to do so immediately, stressing that the enforcement exercise will be sustained and statewide.

Members of the public were also advised to patronise only commercial vehicles bearing the official Edo State security code, as the government intensifies efforts to promote safety, order, and accountability within the transportation system.
