The Edo State Government has commenced full enforcement operations to decongest Ring Road and restore order in Benin City, as part of ongoing efforts to sanitise commercial transportation activities across the metropolis.
The exercise, according to the ministry public relations officer, Gloria Agbongiasede, which marked the first day of the operation, was led by the Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Uwuilekhue Saturday Idehen (JP), alongside officials of the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA), the Edo State Task Force, and members of the Inter-Ministerial Enforcement Committee.
The enforcement team was deployed to major flashpoints around Ring Road and the Central Park, where commercial vehicles were restricted from picking up or dropping passengers within the Ring Road axis. Operators were directed to load and offload strictly at the Central Park, in line with existing government directives aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving public safety.
As part of the exercise, the Commissioner and members of the team conducted on-the-spot assessments, trekking through Ring Road, the Central Park, and surrounding areas to monitor compliance, demonstrate the seriousness of the operation, and engage directly with transport operators and members of the public.
Speaking during the exercise, Hon. Idehen emphasized that enforcement is fully in force, urging commercial vehicle operators to comply strictly with transportation regulations, including adherence to the approved vehicle colour code and operating solely from designated parks.
He explained that the initiative is designed to promote orderliness, improve traffic flow, and enhance safety for road users, stressing that sustained enforcement, alongside public cooperation, is essential to achieving lasting results.
The Commissioner further assured residents of the state government’s commitment to building a structured, secure, and efficient transportation system, noting that sensitisation efforts would continue alongside enforcement to ensure full compliance across the city.
