The Edo State Security Network (ESSN) has arrested two suspected drug dealers and recovered a large quantity of illicit drugs during separate operations in Benin City, Edo State.
The suspects, identified as Efosa Uyi and Stella Thompson, were apprehended at different locations within the state capital following intelligence-led operations by ESSN personnel.
According to security officials, the suspects were allegedly involved in the sale and distribution of illegal substances, including cannabis and other hard drugs, which authorities say contribute to rising cases of drug abuse among youths.
Items recovered from the suspects include Indian hemp, crystal methamphetamine (commonly known as Ice), Colorado (Colos), Canadian Loud, and Scottish Loud. The substances were seized in significant quantities during the operations.
Speaking to journalists on the arrests, the Commissioner for Public Security and Safety, Festus Ebea, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to combating drug-related crimes and ensuring Edo remains unsafe for drug traffickers and dealers.
Ebea disclosed that the suspects would be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.
“We have arrested two suspects at different locations in Benin City and will hand them over to the NDLEA. We are working closely with the agency to rid the state of individuals involved in drug-related activities,” he said.
He added that security operatives would continue to intensify efforts to identify and apprehend drug dealers and users across the state.
“These suspects were arrested on Friday, May 29, 2026, with large quantities of illicit drugs. We are using this opportunity to warn those involved in the sale and distribution of illegal drugs to desist, as Edo State will not be a safe haven for their activities,” Ebea stated.
The commissioner also appealed to young people to stay away from drugs, stressing that substance abuse has devastating consequences on their future and overall well-being.
“To protect our youths from the dangers of drug abuse, we must continue to arrest and prosecute those engaged in the sale and distribution of illicit substances. Drug use has no benefits; it only destroys lives and hinders personal development,” he said.
Ebea further called on members of the media to monitor the prosecution process and help ensure justice is served, noting that successful prosecution would serve as a deterrent to others involved in drug-related crimes.
He emphasized that many criminal activities are often linked to substance abuse, urging residents to support ongoing efforts aimed at making Edo State safer and more secure.
