The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed as false and malicious a viral claim alleging that its Chairman endorsed a partisan post on X.
In a statement issued in Abuja by the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman, Adedayo Oketola, the Commission said the allegation was “entirely baseless” and a fabrication designed to mislead the public and undermine confidence in the electoral body.
According to the statement, the INEC Chairman does not operate any personal account on X and has never engaged in partisan commentary, either in a private or official capacity.
INEC described the circulating post as part of a “coordinated campaign of calumny” aimed at discrediting the neutrality and integrity of its leadership, especially at a time when the Commission is focused on electoral reforms and preparations for upcoming polls.
The Commission also raised concerns about the activities of cybercriminals who have allegedly been creating fake social media accounts in the Chairman’s name to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians. It noted that several such accounts had previously been identified and reported to security agencies.
INEC stated that it is collaborating with law enforcement and cyber-intelligence units to track down those responsible for the impersonation and misinformation campaign. It warned that offenders would face prosecution under relevant laws, including provisions of Nigeria’s Cybercrimes legislation.
“The Commission will not allow digital imposters to tarnish the image of its leadership,” the statement said, adding that those behind the fake content would be brought to justice as a deterrent to others.
INEC urged the public to disregard the false claims and rely only on information disseminated through its verified institutional channels and official press statements.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to delivering free, fair, and credible elections across the country.
