Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has announced his withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primaries, saying the decision was taken in the interest of peace, unity, and stability in the state.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Fubara said the move followed extensive consultations with his family, friends, and political associates, stressing that personal ambition must give way to the greater good of Rivers State.
The governor stated that although the decision was difficult, he remained committed to supporting whoever emerges as the APC candidate in the forthcoming governorship election.
“Leadership is ultimately about sacrifice. There comes a time when personal ambition must yield to the greater good of the people. Rivers State is bigger than any individual,” he said.
Fubara acknowledged the disappointment his supporters might feel following the announcement and thanked them for their loyalty, sacrifices, and unwavering support throughout his political journey.
He explained that his silence in recent weeks was deliberate and guided by the higher interest of the state, while hinting at political pressures surrounding recent developments.
“As our elders say, not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace. Some truths are best borne quietly, not out of fear, but out of wisdom and restraint for the sake of peace and a greater purpose,” the statement read.
The governor maintained that his withdrawal should not be interpreted as an act of weakness or surrender, insisting that the decision was made out of conviction and sacrifice for the peace of Rivers State.
Fubara also expressed appreciation to the leadership of the APC and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their support and encouragement during the political process.
He urged party faithful to remain united and committed to the APC ahead of the governorship election, adding that he would continue serving the people of Rivers State until the end of his tenure.
