A tragic accident has occurred today on the Benin–Sapele Road Bypass in Edo State, sending shockwaves through residents and road users.
A heavy-duty trailer reportedly fell onto a smaller vehicle, with unconfirmed reports indicating that children may be trapped inside. The development has left commuters, residents, and sympathisers heartbroken, especially at a time when many Nigerians should be celebrating and enjoying life.
Eyewitnesses and regular users of the bypass expressed deep frustration over the condition of the road, describing it as a daily struggle to navigate. According to residents, ongoing road construction has turned the area into a dangerous stretch, with deep holes dug on both sides of the highway, sand heaps barricading turn-offs, and only a narrow passage left for motorists.

“This is my area. We literally struggle every day just to pass here,” one resident lamented. “We understand there is construction, but why dig holes on both sides and block all the turn-offs? Anytime I’m driving through that place, I’m praying.”
Others blamed what they described as reckless driving by some truck operators, saying trailers often speed through the narrow route, putting other road users at serious risk.
Anger was also directed at both the federal and Edo State governments, with many accusing authorities of neglect and politicising the road project for years without delivering lasting solutions.

“This road has been a problem since 2015,” another sympathiser said. “See what this neglect has caused.”
While some questioned why a passenger vehicle would drive too close to a trailer, many agreed that the road itself has become a death trap.
“Benin–Sapele road na road wey person dey hold him heart before passing,” a commuter said, reflecting the fear shared by many.
Concerned citizens are now calling for urgent intervention, improved traffic control, and faster completion of the road to prevent further loss of lives. Others advised motorists to keep a long distance from trailers at all times, whether moving or stationary.
As rescue efforts continue, prayers and hopes remain high that those reportedly trapped—especially the children—will be saved.
