At 13 years old, Tokunbo Akintola became the first Black student to be admitted to Eton College, a prestigious private school in England.
His enrollment was a significant event, symbolizing the aspirations of a newly independent Nigeria for a modern, educated leadership class.
Tokunbo’s father, Ladoke Akintola, was a prominent political figure during Nigeria’s First Republic.
Tragically, Tokunbo faced intense bullying at Eton and passed away in 1973 at the age of 22, four years after leaving the institution.
