The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced an extension of the deadline for the submission of political parties’ registers of members as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
In a press statement issued on Friday, March 27, 2026, and signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the Commission said the decision followed concerns raised by political parties.
According to INEC, the concerns emerged during a meeting with political parties held on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, regarding the earlier timeline scheduled from April 1 to April 21, 2026, for submission of membership registers.
The Commission explained that the adjustment was necessary to align with the 21-day requirement stipulated under Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act 2026, which mandates that party membership registers be submitted at least 21 days before party primaries.
INEC stated that political parties are now free to conduct their primaries within the approved window of April 23 to May 30, 2026.
It further emphasized that all parties must submit their membership registers no later than 21 days before their respective primaries. Consequently, the final deadline for submission has been extended to May 10, 2026, instead of the earlier April 21, 2026 date.
The Commission urged political parties to strictly adhere to the revised timetable to ensure a smooth and credible electoral process.
