LAGOS — The Nigerian film and television industry has been thrown into mourning following the reported death of veteran actor and theatre practitioner, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, at the age of 84.
The announcement was contained in a tribute published by NTA Lagos Channel 10, which described the late actor as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished icons whose career spanned more than five decades.
According to the tribute, Jacobs was a veteran actor, theatre practitioner and film executive whose contribution to Nigerian theatre, television and film helped shape the country’s entertainment industry.
Born in 1942, Jacobs trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, after which he built a career in British theatre and television before returning to Nigeria.
He subsequently became a familiar face on Nigerian television and film, earning recognition for his commanding screen presence, distinctive voice and versatility as an actor.
NTA Lagos recalled his appearances in memorable productions, including the popular NTA television series “The Third Eye,” as well as numerous theatre, television and film productions in Nigeria and internationally.
The station described Jacobs as a figure who represented excellence and professionalism in the performing arts, noting that his career contributed to giving Nigerian stories a stronger presence on stage, television and film.
“Oludotun Bayeiwu Jacobs — The Lion of Lufodo. Your curtain has fallen, but your legacy lives on,” the station said in its tribute.
The late actor’s contribution to the Nigerian entertainment industry extended beyond individual performances, with his body of work continuing to serve as a reference point for generations of actors and other performers.
NTA Lagos expressed condolences to his family, colleagues, friends and admirers, praying for the repose of his soul.
Olu Jacobs was 84.
