Candidates in the November 8 Anambra governorship election have signed a peace accord, pledging to conduct themselves peacefully before, during, and after the polls.
The peace signing ceremony, held on Monday in Awka, was organized by the National Peace Committee (NPC) under the leadership of former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.).
Among the signatories were Governor Chukwuma Soludo, candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA); Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC); and John Chima Nwosu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). In total, 16 political parties participated in the peace pact.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), assured that the election would be peaceful, transparent, and credible.
Amupitan commended the National Peace Committee for its “unwavering commitment to fostering peaceful elections across Nigeria”, adding that INEC was fully prepared to ensure a smooth process in Anambra.
He urged all political parties, candidates, and supporters to abide by the spirit of the accord and place the state’s peace and unity above partisan interests.
The peace accord is part of ongoing efforts by the NPC to promote issue-based campaigns and reduce election-related violence in Nigeria.
