The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, has announced with deep sorrow the passing of veteran journalist and union member, Comrade Dave Okpogadie, who died on Saturday morning after a courageous battle with jaw cancer that lasted for more than two years.
In a statement issued by the Chairman of the NUJ Delta State Council, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, the union described Dave as a dedicated colleague and cherished friend whose resilience and courage inspired everyone who knew him.
The statement noted that throughout his prolonged illness, Dave was surrounded by an outpouring of love and support from family, friends, colleagues, and well-wishers whose prayers, encouragement, financial assistance, and regular visits sustained him until his final moments.
The council expressed profound appreciation to everyone who stood by the late journalist during his difficult journey. Special recognition was given to Onomiguren Agbamu, Asiwaju Sola Adebayo, the Welfare Committee of the NUJ Delta State Council, the leadership and members of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Asaba, the Ovie of Idjerhe Kingdom, Chief Festus Ahon, Comrade Nkem Nwaeke, Mr. Sunny Areh, and many others whose invaluable contributions brought comfort and hope to Dave and his family.
“Your sacrifices, prayers, visits, words of encouragement, and financial support provided immense comfort during one of life’s most challenging moments. We sincerely appreciate every act of kindness and generosity extended to our departed colleague,” the statement said.
As preparations begin for a befitting final farewell, the NUJ Delta State Council prayed for God’s abundant blessings upon everyone who contributed in one way or another, asking that the Almighty replenish all they expended and reward their kindness beyond measure.
The union also prayed for the peaceful repose of the late Comrade Dave Okpogadie’s soul and for God to grant his family, friends, colleagues, and all who mourn him the strength and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
