Asaba — The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, has announced the sudden passing of Vivian Nkechika, a member of the broadcast family of DBS Asaba, describing her death as painful, shocking, and deeply distressing.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Chairman of the Union, Mr. Churchill Oyowe, expressed profound sadness over the loss and announced a proposal for a 12-hour suspension of normal activities on the Union’s platforms as a mark of respect.
According to the statement, no stories are to be posted during the mourning period, while partner platforms and organisations whose contents are usually shared are to be duly informed of the period of grief.
“Life should not go on as though nothing has happened,” the NUJ Chairman stated, noting that the loss has left members of the broadcast and journalism community deeply bereaved.
Mr. Oyowe described the death as particularly heartbreaking, coming barely a month after the passing of Matthew Ochei in early January, saying the Union has once again been confronted with a painful and unexpected farewell.
He noted that Vivian Nkechika was more than a colleague, describing her as a friend and a valued member of the professional family whose absence would be deeply felt.
The NUJ Delta State Council called on members to use the period to reflect, mourn collectively, and honour her memory with the solemnity and respect it deserves.
The statement concluded with prayers for the peaceful repose of her soul and strength and comfort for all affected by the loss.
