The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has declared an indefinite strike in Oyo State following the abduction of teachers and schoolchildren in Oriire Local Government Area by suspected bandits.
The union said the industrial action became necessary to press for the immediate rescue and safe return of the victims, who were kidnapped on May 15, 2026.
In a circular dated May 29, 2026, and jointly signed by the National President of the union, Audu Amba, and the Secretary-General, Clinton Ikpitibo, the NUT directed its members in Oyo State to withdraw their services indefinitely until concrete steps are taken to secure the release of the abducted teachers and pupils.
The union expressed deep concern over the safety of teachers and learners, describing the incident as a disturbing attack on the nation’s education system and a threat to the welfare of education workers.
As part of efforts to draw national attention to the plight of the victims, the NUT also directed all its state wings across the country to organize solidarity rallies on Tuesday in support of the abducted teachers, schoolchildren and their families.
According to the union, the rallies are intended to amplify calls for urgent action by security agencies and relevant authorities to ensure the victims regain their freedom without further delay.
The strike action comes amid growing anxiety among parents, teachers and residents over the fate of the abducted schoolchildren and their teachers, whose whereabouts remain unknown weeks after the incident.
The NUT reiterated its commitment to protecting the interests and safety of its members and called on the federal and state governments to strengthen security around schools to prevent future attacks.
The union further urged security agencies to intensify rescue efforts and ensure the safe return of all those still in captivity.
