Lieutenant Colonel Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, leader of the Biafran secessionist movement, announced the introduction of a new Biafran currency and postage stamps during a meeting of the Consultative Assembly in Owerri. The currency and stamps were officially issued on January 29, marking another step by the breakaway region to assert its sovereignty.
The following day, January 30, reports emerged that Ojukwu, in an interview earlier in the week with United Press International, expressed willingness to accept intervention by the United States as a means of bringing an end to the escalating conflict.
At the time, the Nigerian Civil War sparked by Biafra’s declaration of secession had entered its sixth month, with fighting intensifying and humanitarian conditions worsening across the region.
