The political crisis in Rivers State has deepened following the presentation of eight allegations against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, forming the basis of ongoing impeachment moves by the State House of Assembly.
The accusations centre on alleged violations of constitutional provisions, financial impropriety, and actions said to undermine the independence and effective functioning of the legislature.
According to the allegations, the governor is accused of engaging in reckless and unconstitutional expenditure of public funds, as well as the misappropriation of state resources without due process.
He is also alleged to have deliberately hindered the Rivers State House of Assembly from carrying out its constitutional responsibilities, including making illegal appointments without subjecting nominees to the mandatory screening and confirmation process by lawmakers.
Other allegations include the seizure and withholding of salaries and allowances meant for members of the House of Assembly, as well as the stoppage of salaries for the Clerk of the Assembly, Emeka Amadi.
Governor Fubara is further accused of refusing to implement constitutional provisions guaranteeing the financial autonomy of the legislature and the judiciary. Additionally, he is alleged to have withheld funds meant for the operation of the Rivers State House of Assembly Service Commission, thereby obstructing its activities.
These allegations have heightened political tensions in the state, as stakeholders await the next steps in the impeachment process and its potential implications for governance in Rivers State.
