President Bola Tinubu has approved sweeping changes in the leadership of the Nigerian Armed Forces, marking one of the most significant military shake-ups of his administration.
In a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, the president announced the appointment of Major General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).
Oluyede replaces General Christopher Musa, who had held the position since 2023. The statement also confirmed the appointment of Major General Ibrahim Shaibu to another top military post, signaling a broad restructuring within the defence hierarchy.
According to the presidency, the move is part of Tinubu’s ongoing efforts to “reinvigorate the nation’s security architecture and ensure a more coordinated approach to tackling emerging security challenges across the country.”
While details of the new appointees’ portfolios are still emerging, the shake-up is expected to usher in a new phase of strategic leadership within the Nigerian Military.
