Students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Ekehuan Campus, Edo State, Nigeria on Saturday staged a protest over a three-day power outage and persistent water shortage, blocking the main entrance to the campus.
The demonstration disrupted movement in and out of the campus, leaving several university workers, business operators and visitors stranded, including those with scheduled appointments and official engagements.
Some of the protesting students, who spoke to reporters during the demonstration, expressed frustration over what they described as the failure of the university management to provide basic amenities despite the payment of tuition and other institutional charges.
According to the students, the lack of electricity and running water has worsened sanitary conditions in the hostels, making living conditions uncomfortable and unhealthy.
As of the time of filing this report, the university authorities had yet to issue an official response regarding the protest or the concerns raised by the students.
