The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, has ordered the immediate orderly trial of two police officers allegedly involved in extorting a civilian within the premises of the C Division Police Station in Asaba.
The officers—Inspector Augustine Jeremiah (AP No. 262712) and Corporal Miracle Ehirim (F/No. 519970)—were directed to face summary proceedings on Thursday, with authorities promising that the outcome would be made public the same day.
The directive followed the circulation of a viral video showing a uniformed officer supervising a man as he completed a forced payment of ₦51,500 via a point-of-sale (POS) terminal inside the station.
Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, confirmed the development in a post on X (formerly Twitter), describing the footage as “embarrassing” and reiterating the command’s stance against misconduct and impunity.
The video, which lasts over three minutes, was shared online by human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu. It shows a man inside a room within the station holding two mobile phones as he completes a transaction, while an officer stands nearby observing.
A close-up of the device revealed a successful Moniepoint transfer of ₦51,500 to an account labelled “POS Transfer — Sunday Racheal Kewe.”
In his post, Gwamnishu alleged that POS operators are frequently stationed within some police facilities in Delta State to facilitate on-the-spot extortion payments.
The incident has drawn wider attention after Gwamnishu tagged the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Complaint Response Unit, accusing authorities of failing to curb such practices.
Responding to the allegations, the Police Complaint Response Unit confirmed that the officers had been identified, arrested, and detained. It added that the Inspector-General of Police had directed that they be produced at Force Headquarters in Abuja on Monday, April 20, for further investigation.
The complaint has been registered under tracking number CRU000073 as authorities continue to probe the incident.
