The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has explained why he has chosen to remain monogamous, saying the decision is rooted in his desire for family harmony, balance, and quality time with his wife and children.

The traditional ruler made the remarks in an interview aired on BBC Pidgin and shared on social media on Friday, addressing public expectations that monarchs often marry multiple wives.

According to Ogiame Atuwatse III, managing more than one household would complicate his private life and reduce the attention he can give to his immediate family.

He noted that dividing his time among multiple homes would affect the quality of care, presence, and emotional investment he offers his wife and children.

The Olu of Warri, who married Ivie Atuwatse in 2014 and is blessed with three children, said his lifestyle already requires a careful balance between royal duties and family life. When not engaged in official responsibilities, he prefers to spend his time at home rather than managing multiple households.

He further explained that his position as a traditional ruler comes with constant meetings, calls, and engagements with government officials, making moments of rest and family interaction especially valuable.

“I don’t feel equipped for polygamy,” the monarch said, adding that he is comfortable and fulfilled with a monogamous lifestyle.

His comments have sparked conversations online, with many applauding his openness and modern perspective on marriage and leadership.
