A family gathering in Delta State ended in tragedy after a disagreement over a ₦1,000 contribution reportedly escalated into a fatal altercation.
The incident occurred on December 12, 2025, in Ughelli South Local Government Area, following a family meeting held after the burial of a relative. The Delta State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, SP Edafe Bright, in a video shared on social media platform X on Monday.
According to the police, tension arose during the meeting when an argument broke out over the refund of a ₦1,000 contribution made for burial rites. The disagreement reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation among family members.
SP Edafe explained that during the altercation, a 47-year-old man identified as Ezekiel allegedly struck his first cousin, who later died. The deceased was said to be 42 years old and had reportedly attempted to calm the situation before the incident occurred.
The suspect has since expressed remorse and maintained that the death was unintentional. He stated that he did not realize the force of his action at the time and described the incident as accidental. He also explained that the ₦1,000 was part of a customary contribution typically refunded after burial ceremonies.
Using the incident as a cautionary example, SP Edafe urged members of the public to exercise restraint and avoid physical confrontations, stressing that seemingly minor disputes can have irreversible consequences.
He emphasized the importance of emotional control, noting that violent reactions can quickly escalate into serious criminal outcomes. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
