The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has confirmed the alleged abduction of no fewer than 163 worshippers by suspected terrorists in Kurmin Wali, Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
However, the Kaduna State Police Command has strongly denied the claim, insisting that no abduction took place and challenging CAN and other sources to provide the names and details of the alleged victims.
Speaking to journalists on Monday, Chairman of Northern CAN, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, said the worshippers were abducted during Sunday church services at Cherubim and Seraphim Church 1 and Cherubim and Seraphim Church 2 in the community.
According to Hayab, the attackers reportedly stormed the churches while services were ongoing, locked the gates, and forcefully marched congregants into the surrounding bush.
He said the information was relayed to him through a distress call from the local CAN chairman in the affected area.
Hayab disclosed that eight of the abducted worshippers later escaped, but as of Monday, 163 people were still believed to be in captivity.
“Security officers are already on top of the matter. We commend their efforts and urge them to do everything possible to rescue our brothers and sisters safely and unhurt in good time,” Hayab said.
The incident has once again highlighted the persistent security challenges in parts of Southern Kaduna, where residents have continued to experience attacks by armed groups despite ongoing military and security operations.
Police Denial
In a swift response, the Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State, Alhaji Muhammad Rabiu, dismissed the report, describing it as false and misleading.
Rabiu spoke to journalists after a State Security Council meeting held at Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna.
He alleged that the report was fabricated by what he described as “conflict entrepreneurs” seeking to destabilize the state.
“The story is a mere falsehood. Anyone who claims people were kidnapped should come forward with the names and particulars of those involved,” the police commissioner said.
Rabiu warned that individuals spreading unverified information and rumours would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
