The Delta State Government has expressed its willingness to take concerted efforts toward strengthening and sanitizing the state transport sector in the 2026 fiscal year and beyond.

Appearing before the State Assembly Committee on Transport led by Hon Festus Okoh, Ika South, the Commissioner in charge of the Directorate, Mr. Onoriode Agofure, the Directorate is proposing a sum of ₦12 billion as budget estimates for the 2026.

The proposal, replaces the ₦6.1 billion approved budget for the outgoing fiscal year.

According to the Commissioner, the proposed ₦12 billion for 2026 is part of a deliberate effort by the state government to revamp and strengthen the transport sector.

Mr Agofore highlighted some areas of focus for next budget year to include, construction and rehabilitation of jetties, procurement of additional tow trucks, purchase of urban mass‑transit buses, installation of road‑traffic and warning signs, and other related projects.

Regarding the Directorate’s plan to sanitise the sector, the Commissioner announced the launch of an Automated Number‑Plate Recognition (ANPR) system.

Agofore explained that ANPR will curb traffic violations, improve compliance with vehicle documentation, and assist security agencies in tracking crime‑related vehicles.

On revenue generation, the Commissioner told the committee that the Directorate is committed to improving state revenue from the transport sector.

He noted that in the outgoing year the Directorate surpassed its 2025 revenue target of ₦200 million, collecting over ₦300 million, a performance of more than 115.8 %.

The Chairman, Assembly Committee on Transport, Hon. Festus Okoh, representing Ika South constituency, urged the Directorate to strengthen its operational mechanisms in the coming years in line with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE agenda.
