Former United States Vice President Kamala Harris has called on Democratic lawmakers to use their newly secured majorities in Congress to address economic challenges facing American families and strengthen oversight of President Donald Trump’s administration.
Harris made the call in a statement released on November 4, 2026, following the Democratic Party’s victories in the midterm elections, which saw the party regain control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Reacting to the outcome, Harris described the election results as a clear expression of public dissatisfaction with the policies of the White House and the leadership of congressional Republicans.
She said Americans had spoken against what she characterised as corruption, incompetence and insensitivity within the administration, adding that voters expected elected officials to translate their demands into meaningful action.
The former vice president also reflected on her nationwide campaign activities ahead of the elections, noting that she had witnessed the determination of Americans to turn their frustrations into political action.
She congratulated Democratic candidates who contested elections across the country, as well as thousands of volunteers who participated in voter mobilisation, campaign activities and grassroots organising.
However, Harris stressed that winning congressional majorities was only the beginning, urging Democratic lawmakers to make effective use of their legislative influence.
According to her, the party must prioritise economic relief for working families while holding the Trump administration accountable through congressional oversight.
“The American people have elected Democrats across the country in federal, state, and local races who must be ruthless in using every lever of power to deliver economic relief for working families and hold this administration accountable,” she stated.
The Democratic victories mark a significant shift in the balance of political power in Washington, with the party set to control both chambers of Congress when the new lawmakers take office in January 2027.
The outcome is also expected to usher in a period of heightened political scrutiny of the Trump administration, particularly over its economic policies and other major decisions.
Harris’s message underscores the expectations facing Democratic lawmakers as they prepare to assume congressional leadership, with voters looking for action on the cost of living, healthcare and other pressing national concerns.
