A church community has been thrown into controversy after a fundraising drive for a critically ill member generated far more money than the stated hospital bill — sparking disagreement over how the surplus should be used.
According to a story shared by IamNej on X, the church organized a special collection during a service after the pastor informed congregants that a member had been hospitalized and urgently needed ₦210,000 for treatment, an amount his family could not afford.
“Our brother is hospitalized and needs ₦210,000. Let us support him,” the pastor reportedly announced to the congregation.
Moved by compassion, members donated generously. By the end of the service, the total contributions had reached ₦960,000 more than four times the requested amount.
However, tensions arose after the funds were counted. The pastor reportedly released ₦210,000 to the sick man’s brother to settle the hospital bill and directed that the remaining ₦750,000 be deposited into the church’s account.
The decision did not sit well with the family, who argued that the entire ₦960,000 was given out of goodwill to support their loved one’s recovery, including medication, post-hospital care, and other living expenses.
They maintained that donors contributed out of empathy for the patient’s overall situation not strictly to meet a fixed hospital target.
The pastor, on the other hand, reportedly insisted that his appeal to the congregation was specifically for ₦210,000 to cover the hospital bill. According to him, once that amount was met, any additional funds collected belonged to the church.
The situation has since sparked debate about transparency, donor intent, and ethical responsibility in community fundraising.
While some believe the pastor acted within the scope of his initial request, others argue that moral obligation and compassion should have guided the disbursement of the entire sum to the sick member.
