A health professional has advised Nigerians to pay greater attention to their kidney health, warning that several everyday habits could increase the risk of kidney problems and other complications.

In a health advisory shared online, the professional, who identified himself as a “Doctor of the Future,” urged people to adopt healthier lifestyles, including adequate hydration, responsible medication use, balanced nutrition and better control of conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.

The expert cautioned against excessive consumption of sugary drinks, smoking and alcohol, noting that these habits could have adverse effects on overall health and potentially place additional strain on the kidneys.

He also warned against indiscriminate use of medications, particularly painkillers and other drugs taken without appropriate medical guidance.

According to him, people should also be cautious about recreational drug use and avoid self-medication, stressing that certain substances can cause serious health complications.

The health professional further highlighted obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure as conditions that require proper management because of their links to kidney disease and other long-term health problems.

He also addressed concerns about protein consumption, arguing that healthy individuals should not unnecessarily eliminate protein from their diets because of fears about kidney damage.

The expert recommended obtaining protein from nutritious sources such as eggs, fish and meat as part of a balanced diet, while noting that individual dietary needs may vary.

He equally encouraged people to seek professional medical and nutritional advice rather than relying solely on information circulating on social media.

“Your kidneys are not made of stone. But they will stone you with regret if you keep playing,” he said, urging people to take preventive health measures seriously.

He concluded by encouraging individuals to seek professional guidance when planning their diets and managing their health.

Health experts generally advise people with existing kidney disease or other medical conditions to seek personalised dietary and medical advice, as nutritional and medication needs can vary from person to person.
