Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has paid tribute to his late predecessor, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, marking 16 years since his passing.
In a commemorative statement, Jonathan described the late leader as a symbol of integrity, humility, and selfless service, noting that he shared a close personal and professional relationship with Yar’Adua during their time in office.
Reflecting on their partnership, Jonathan said both leaders were united by a common vision of building a just, inclusive, and united Nigeria, where the rule of law is upheld and democratic principles are respected.
He characterized Yar’Adua as a leader of “quiet but profound conviction,” who believed strongly in the sanctity of the ballot and the importance of lawful governance. According to him, the late president consistently placed national interest and stability above personal or political considerations.
Jonathan also highlighted Yar’Adua’s contributions to peace-building efforts, describing them as a lasting legacy that continues to shape the country’s development. He noted that the former president demonstrated courage in addressing national challenges and a sincere commitment to reform.
The former president further stated that Yar’Adua’s life remains a guiding example for leaders, emphasizing that true leadership is rooted in accountability, transparency, and genuine concern for the people.
Sixteen years after his death, Jonathan said Yar’Adua’s achievements and values continue to resonate, urging Nigerians to uphold the ideals he championed.
He concluded with prayers for the repose of the late president’s soul, asking Allah to grant him eternal rest.
